BEAUFORT HERITAGE WALK


 

Beaufort was first eplored in the 1830's by Major Sir Thomas Mitchell, gold was discovered at Yam Holes Hill in 1854 and the Fiery Creek became the centre of a gold rush in 1855.

C.Webster completed a survey of the area in 1857, and the township was surveyed and named Beaufort in approximately 1880. A land sale was conducted at the Police Court March 17th 1858, where 38 lots were sold. A new road was formed through Beaufort in September 1860. By 1861 the population was 1216, with only 364 being woman.

Beaufort was created a district in April 12th 1861, andcame under the jurisdiction of the Carngham Roads Board. it was proclaimed the Shire of Ripon on December 18th 1863. The first council meeting was held on Camp Hill January 6th 1864.
